Soothing Postpartum Pads

Tender, aches, pain, tearing, stitches. After birth can be quite painful. These pads are designed to help relieve some of that pain while helping to heal as well.

You can even make & use these in your nearing the end of pregnancy days. I’m there right now & extremely uncomfortable. Baby is pushing down, pelvis is attempting to accommodate, cervix is preparing, etc. It can be a challenge just to move, let alone attempting to walk, do stairs or anything else. I didn’t have this kind of pain during my first pregnancy, it wasn’t until AFTER giving birth did I feel this uncomfort… apparently it’s quite common though. I’m not going to lie, I’ve fallen asleep with an ice pack on the area. >.<

Chamomile is gentle and soothing as well as anti-inflammatory, calendula is a wonderful all-purpose healer. It has many healing benefits including skin regenerative properties.

What You’ll Need: 

  • Washcloths folded / reusable pads / panty liners / disposable pads or postpartum padsI would personally recommend reusable pads as disposable can contain different chemicals & have the possibility of sticking to stitches so be mindful of that as well. The preference is up to you.

  • Chamomile / Calendula tea (make this by steeping 2 tbsp each of
  • Chamomile Flowers (or Chamomile Tea) & Calendula Flowers into 4 (or more) cups of boiling water – allow to cool.)
  • Aloe Vera Gel (2 or so tbsp)
  • Vitamin e oil (1 tsp – optional)

Steep tea for 10-15 minutes.

I love to use my Brentwood insulated pot from Epicure along with the brewing basket. It makes thing SO easy. If you’re interested in this product (Canada wide) please let me know or check out my independent Epicure consultant website🙂

Strain your tea mixture. OR if you have this (or a similar) pot then just remove the brewing basket when you’re ready to make.

Pour tea mixture into a big (heatproof) bowl

Stir aloe (& vitamin e) into your tea while it is still warm to allow for it to dissolve.

Stir everything together really well.

Once cooled completely, Soak pads (or cloths) into the mixture. (You can also pour or spray the mixture on if you’re using disposable)

Place in freezer with wax paper in between to avoid them freezing together. (If you’re using disposable pads, you can keep their sticky liner on, and use that to keep separate)

*You can place these in a shallow bowl to take on the natural shape of a woman for easier wear.* (Something freezer friendly, of course. Heavy plastic or metal.)

Once frozen, keep in a freezer safe ziplock baggie for sanitary purposes. (& to take up less space in your freezer)

To Wear:

You will probably want to place these on top of whatever postpartum pad you are wearing to help control mess & melting. If you’re done bleeding, or these are for use pre birth, you can just lay or sit on a towel to keep things under control.

*Remember – coconut oil can be massaged into and around the area at anytime (as long as you don’t have any allergies) to help sooth & heal more quickly.
